How a hydraulic bed works
A hydraulic storage bed has a mattress platform hinged at one end and supported by two gas pistons. Lift the edge and the pistons take most of the weight, raising the whole platform and revealing the full storage space underneath. No need to remove the mattress or open sections one by one.
Hydraulic vs box storage
- Hydraulic: full access, lighter effort, more convenient for daily use; pistons need replacing after some years.
- Box storage: simpler, fewer parts, access in sections.
Getting it right
The pistons must be rated for the weight of the platform and mattress. Too weak and the bed won't stay open; too strong and it's hard to close. Mattresses up to about 8 inches thick work best. Keep fingers clear of the hinge when closing, especially with children around.
