What a diwan is, and why it's so useful
A diwan (also spelled divan or deewan) is a low, armless cot with a firm mattress top, often with bolsters along the back. By day it's extra seating in the living room; by night it's a bed for a guest or family member. It has no mechanism to wear out, so it's simpler and sturdier than a sofa cum bed.

Most diwans are about 15–18 inches high including the mattress, which makes them comfortable to sit on like a sofa.
