Why steel almirahs are still popular
The steel almirah (bero) has been a fixture of Indian homes for decades. It's strong, termite-proof, unaffected by damp, and comes with a built-in locker for jewellery, cash and documents. It's also a favourite for PGs, hostels and offices because it takes rough use and lasts for years.
What to look for
- Steel thickness: thicker sheet steel resists dents and feels solid.
- Powder coating: protects against rust and gives an even finish.
- Locks: a main lock with a multi-point locking bar, plus a separate locker lock.
- Inside layout: shelves, hanging rod, locker and drawers that match what you store.
- Mirror door: handy in bedrooms; our black almirah has a full-length mirror.
- Base: a raised base or legs keeps it off wet floors.
