Bookshelves built for books
Books are heavy. A shelf that looks fine empty can sag within months once it's full. Good bookshelves use thick enough boards, short enough spans and solid backs so they stay straight and stable for years.
Planning a bookshelf
- Shelf span: keep shelves under about 75–90 cm wide, or add a centre support.
- Shelf depth: 25–30 cm suits most books; 35 cm for large art books and files.
- Shelf height: 30–35 cm for paperbacks and most hardbacks; one taller row for big books.
- Adjustable shelves: useful if your collection changes.
- Wall fixing: tall bookcases should be anchored to the wall, especially with children at home.
Styles
Open shelves, glass-fronted bookcases to keep dust off, ladder-style shelves, wall-mounted floating shelves, or floor-to-ceiling library walls built around a desk or window.
Made to measure in wood or plywood with laminate or veneer. Wall shelf installation is available too; see assembly and installation. See all storage.
FAQ
Bookshelves & Bookcases: your questions
Will long shelves sag under books?
We keep shelf spans short or add supports so heavy books don't bow the shelves.
