A king size bed in India takes a 72 x 78 inch mattress (6 x 6.5 ft); a queen takes 60 x 78 inches (5 x 6.5 ft). A king gives two sleepers 36 inches each, a queen 30. Choose a queen for rooms around 10 x 10 ft and a king for 12 x 12 ft and larger.

"Double bed" is used loosely in India. It can mean a 4 × 6 ft bed or a 5 × 6.5 ft queen. Always check the mattress dimensions in inches before buying a bed or mattress.
Remember the frame adds size
The mattress size isn't the floor space you need. A bed frame adds roughly 4–6 inches on each side and at the foot, and a thick or upholstered headboard adds more at the head. A king bed often takes about 6.5 × 7 ft of floor space; a queen about 5.5 × 7 ft.

Aim to leave at least 60–75 cm (2–2.5 ft) of walking space on the sides you use and in front of wardrobes.
Queen or king: how to decide
- Two adults who like space, or a child who climbs in: king.
- One adult, or a couple in a compact room: queen.
- Guest room: queen, or a diwan if the room doubles as a study.
- Tall sleepers (over about 6 ft): choose the 78-inch length, or have a longer bed made.
- Budget: queen mattresses and linen cost less than king.
Storage changes the equation
In a compact room, a queen bed with box or hydraulic storage can replace a chest of drawers, freeing floor space. In a large room, a king with storage holds as much as a small wardrobe. See storage beds.
