Floor seating for family gatherings
Majlis seating, low cushioned seats running along the walls with back cushions and arm bolsters, is a familiar sight in many Hyderabad homes. It seats far more people than sofas in the same room, which is ideal for Ramzan iftars, weddings, Eid gatherings and large families, and it keeps the centre of the room open.
What a majlis set includes
- Seat cushions (gaddas): firm cotton or foam, 4–6 inches thick.
- Back cushions: against the wall for support.
- Arm bolsters (takiyas): at the ends and between seats.
- Optional low wooden base: raises the seating a little for easier sitting.
Planning
Majlis is always made to order. Measure every wall you want seating on and mark doors and windows. Choose a hard-wearing upholstery fabric that's easy to clean, and consider removable covers for washing.
