Learn moreLeather or leatherette? It changes the repair
Real leather is an animal hide; it scuffs, fades and dries out, but it rarely peels. Leatherette (PU or "rexine") is a plastic coating on a fabric backing; it looks like leather when new but the coating cracks and flakes with age, heat and body oils. Hyderabad's summers speed this up. The repair depends on which you have.
Repairs for real leather
- Cleaning and conditioning dried, cracked leather
- Repairing small tears and scratches
- Re-colouring faded or worn areas
- Replacing badly damaged panels
Repairs for leatherette
Once leatherette starts peeling, it keeps peeling; patching only hides it for a short time. The lasting fix is to replace the worn panels (usually seats and arms, where wear is heaviest) or re-cover the whole sofa in new leatherette or fabric. Many customers switch to a fabric or a better-grade leatherette at this point. See sofa reupholstery.
How to tell which you have
Look at a hidden edge or underneath a cushion zip. A fabric mesh backing means leatherette. Real leather has a suede-like back and slightly irregular grain. If you're not sure, send us a close-up photo on WhatsApp.
