What "orthopedic" really means
An orthopedic mattress is a firm mattress designed to keep the spine in a neutral line, supporting the heavier parts of the body (hips and shoulders) so they don't sink too far. It isn't simply "hard": it should be firm but still let the body's curves settle slightly.
Who it suits
- People with lower back ache who wake up stiff on a soft mattress.
- Back and stomach sleepers who need firm support.
- Heavier sleepers who sink into soft foam.
Side sleepers may find a very firm mattress hard on shoulders and hips; a medium-firm mattress or a soft top layer helps. If you have a medical condition, follow your doctor's advice.
Firm mattress options
A dense, well-filled cotton mattress is the traditional firm choice. Firm HR or high-density foam, sometimes with a thin comfort layer, is another option; see foam mattresses.
