Learn moreHow the gas lift works, and why it fails
The gas lift is the black or chrome cylinder between the seat and the base. Inside is pressurised nitrogen and a valve. Pull the lever and the valve opens, letting the seat rise or sink; release it and the valve locks the height. Over time the seals wear, gas leaks past them, and the chair slowly sinks while you sit or won't lock at any height. A gas lift cannot be recharged; it is replaced as a unit.
Signs your chair needs a new gas lift
- The seat sinks gradually during the day.
- The seat drops suddenly when you sit down.
- It won't rise when you lift the lever (with your weight off the seat).
- It bounces or feels spongy.
- Oil marks or rust around the cylinder.
If the chair won't move at all and the lever feels loose, the problem may be the lever or mechanism rather than the cylinder; we check both.
Choosing a replacement
Cylinders are graded by class: Class 3 and Class 4 cylinders are built for heavier users and longer daily use than basic Class 2. Length matters too: we match the cylinder to your chair and your desk height. Retail prices for replacement cylinders online in India range roughly from ₹435 to ₹2,900 (marketplace listings, October 2026); the right one depends on your chair.
Single chairs and offices
We replace gas lifts at homes and on site at offices, where many chairs from the same batch often fail together. See office chair repair for other parts.
