Restoration is not the same as repair
Old Hyderabadi homes are full of heirloom furniture: teak cots with carved headboards, rosewood chairs, almirahs with brass fittings, planter's chairs and dressing tables passed down through generations. Restoring these is about keeping their character, not making them look factory-new. That means repairing original joints rather than replacing them, matching wood and carving, and choosing finishes that suit the age of the piece.
What restoration can include
- Re-gluing loose original joints and stabilising cracked parts
- Making missing pieces (carvings, mouldings, legs) in matching wood
- Re-caning chairs and re-weaving seats
- Cleaning, repairing or replacing brass hinges, handles and fittings
- Traditional hand polishing and French polish finishes
- Termite treatment and protection
- Re-upholstering antique seats while keeping the original frame
Our approach
We start by assessing the piece: what is original, what was changed later, and how sound the wood is. We then agree with you how far to go, from a gentle clean and conservation polish to a full restoration. Work is done in our Narsingi workshop, and you're welcome to see it in progress. For everyday refinishing, see furniture polishing.
